Left fielder Jay Payton blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Javier Vazquez
hurled a 1 hitter as the SSB SSB Tar Heels defeated the Burbank Tigers by the
score of 6 to 1 at Pro Player Stadium.
Payton had a big day against Burbank. He hit a bases-empty home run in the
4th inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 3rd of the
season) in the 8th inning. SSB rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Vazquez(1-1) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Barry
Zito(1-1) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around by SSB, allowing
12 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
'Vazquez pitched a gem of a game', Wes Davies recounted. 'He kept our batters
off balance the entire game.'
